4.BACKUPS

Whenever you have entered a lot of information, make a backup copy of the Sukujut folder on your hard disk by copying all files with the “idx” extension on a floppy disk. You should also make a backup copy before running the Organize command, which minimizes the disk space used for the family data. The command assumes that you have placed a formatted floppy disk in the disk drive A:

If your files do not fit on a floppy disk, use a file compression application or a backup application. For instance, the Pkzip file compression application is able to compress the files efficiently. If you have the PKZIP.EXE file compression application in your computer (in path), you can use it to compress all files into one “sukujut.zip” file and save it to a floppy disk. After the compression, make sure that the sukujut.zip file is found on the floppy disk.

The Copy to Jemma subdirectory command copies all *.idx files, but no pictures. This is a fast way of backing up all data before making a GEDCOM file, for instance.

The Copy to another disk drive command copies the entire Sukujutut folder with its contents and creates a corresponding folder on the selected disk. In this case, the other drive can be a zip drive, a writeable CD drive or another hard disk.

A backup copy can be restored from a floppy disk with the Copy from A: command on the File menu before entering the password. This function can be used for transferring data between a desktop PC and a laptop. If you have picture files (*.bmp, *.rle, *.dib) or sound files (*.wav) in Sukujutut, you can back them up on floppy disks by using the command Compress all Sukujutut files to A:. You need the Pkzip file compression program for this.
